The health and fitness franchise industry has benefitted from increased interest in healthier lifestyles. This is apparent in the results of Entrepreneur magazine's 2017 Franchise 500, a list of the strongest and most financially sound franchises across all industries. Of the 500 franchises identified, 26 were fitness-based businesses. While some of the leading multi-use gyms were included, the list also reflected the growing success of smaller specialized studios and programs with franchise-unique offerings.
As individuals take more responsibility for their physical well-being, they've become more comfortable spending money on fitness and related therapeutic treatments. A January 2015 article in Vogue magazine contended that, “Wellness has become an important part of the luxury lifestyle.” The report argued that spending on wellness experiences like gym memberships are preferable indulgences to spending on luxury items. The fact that the consumer is doing something that's perceived as good for them supposedly makes a person feel less guilty about spending money. For gym franchises, this can translate into extra dollars as customers see health and fitness expenditures as worthwhile investments. In addition, branded apparel, trademark treatments and other franchise-specific services have a ready market in consumers who are willing to spend money to reinforce their commitment to maintaining physical and emotional well-being.
